Mental Fitness for Sports Officials
Kyle Photo Training

This month features an introduction to our training by a college athlete who will introduce the concept of ‘Thought Stopping & Parking’, a cognitive technique which helps stop negative and self-defeating thoughts in their tracks. Thought Stopping uses mental and behavioral cues to prevent the recurring or to cease negative thoughts in their tracks. Some use a verbal cue like the word ‘Stop’ which for most, can bring about a conditioned response that many of us have known the meaning of since we were children. In other cases, it might be the association with an image or a tangible object that takes that thought process from being negative to something that promotes a more positive, engaging and healthy response. In this case, this athlete uses words he has tattooed on his wrist to take away those negative thoughts and instead, provide him with inspiration and motivation.

In this video, Kyle Swanner, a Scholar-Athlete from Quincy University, will introduce this concept and tell you about how this technique has helped him.

Introduction to Mental Training: Parking & Thought Stopping

Welcome to the Training Page of ‘The Officials Mind’. Each month our site will feature a new and unique training concept to help officials in all sports with their mental fitness. Examples include techniques to cope with stress, build confidence, stay motivated, handle adversity, stay focused, communicate with coaches and players, and much more. We will feature athletes, coaches, sports psychologists, officials and other professionals in the field, who will present skills like imagery, visualization, self-talk, relaxation, parking, thought stopping and other techniques, to help officials be better prepared and better equipped to manage their games. We will also be looking at the mind-body connection and adaptive capacity in the heat of competition. This month features a college athlete who worked on his mental fitness, using a thought stopping/parking technique, replacing negative thoughts with something positive that motivates and inspires him. Check out the video as Kyle talks about his journey and gives a glimpse of next month’s training session. Stay tuned next month for a complete session on this very important concept.
